No Moose on Moosilauke

Hi!!!

Visitor sign in
I hiked Mount Moosilauke with my Laura and my Moriah. It was my first big-mountain that went up high above the trees. We did not see any moose but we did find moose poop! (Laura note: Moosilauke is not named after moose.)

log-bark!
We started on the road that goes to the Moosilauke Ravine Lodge. Lots of people like it there because there were lots of cars parked along that road. The beginning was confusing because there weren’t always signs until you picked a trail and then you could find one a little later. Laura signed us in on the visitors log-bark and we continued on Gorge Brook Trail. I liked this trail.  There was water a lot and it didn’t get very steep. There was even a sign to tell you when there wasn’t going to be any more water!
Trail above tree line

When we got up high, it started getting colder and windy but there were still little trees to keep out some wind. Then all of a sudden there were no more trees and boy was the wind strong. Laura and Moriah got out their jackets and put their legs back on (humans have funny clothes). We got to the top of the mountain and took pictures in the wind. It was so pretty and you could see lots and lots of mountains all around! Someone also put a flag at the top and was always blown open. It was also busy up on the peak because it was lunch time and everyone was trying to find a spot out of the wind. It was colder up there than it was down low. I found a comfy spot in the rocks and had my Tail Mix. Yum!
On top of the world!

On the way down when we first got to the trees and just out of the wind, we met a group coming up. It was lots of pretty girls. They all said how cute, handsome, soft and fluffy I am AND how awesome I was for carrying my own pack. They loved me!

The Osceolas - TWO Mountains!!!

Hi!!!

Last weekend I hiked TWO mountains in one day! East Osceola and Mount Osceola were numbers 4 and 5 on my quest. The best part was that we picked up Susan to go with us.  I love my Susan!
on the tree-log

Our trip started on the north end of the Greeley Ponds Trail off the Kancamagus Highway. It’s an easy walk with some streams but there are also some boardwalks.  I didn’t want to walk on the log planks so I hopped off... but landed in a mud pit! Yuck!

East Osceola is my #4!
When we got to the Mount Osceola Trail, it started to get steep.  It wasn’t too bad but I guess the other way is easier. Oh oh! On one of our snack-spots there was a tree growing SIDEWAYS across the trail. Susan and Laura were sitting on it to take a picture but I wouldn’t let them take it without me.

The Chimney "work-around"
East Osceola is boring. There is a pile of rocks for the peak and a bunch of trees.  There is a view before it but we didn’t go look until the way down. We had more snack and took a photo to celebrate #4!

Between the two mountains is easy... except for THE CHIMNEY! The Chimney goes straight up (I guess that is what a real chimney does? I don’t know what a chimney really is) and is not good for dogs. I was distracted watching a lot of people climb down. We read that there is a work-around so it would be okay but when we got there the workaround was really steep I got up and down most of it without the backpack on because it is narrow, but I needed a lift near the top.  It was a big jump for me at a corner and no room to run. Maybe a tall dog could get up with no help.
View from Osceola!

My peak #5 was much better than #4. Osceola has a big rock-ledge-view. It was a nice day and it was so pretty looking out at the other mountains! We had lunch and of course took photos. I also got more fans for the club! They loved me. We went back down the same way. I needed help on the Chimney again, but it wasn’t too bad. I remembered my lesson from earlier and stayed on the boardwalks the whole time at the end so I didn’t get stuck in a mud pit. AND when we were done hiking we got ICE CREAM! This was my first ice cream and ice cream is good and ice cream is yummy and ice cream is lovely and ice cream is tasty and I want ice cream after every hike!

Mount Tecumseh

Hi!!!

Here we go!
My first big-mountain this year was Tecumseh. It was also my first 4,000 footer where I carried my own backpack! For NH big-mountains, Tecumseh is usually considered the shortest at 4,003 feet. We left from the Waterville Valley ski parking lot so it was only a five mile hike.

It was a good warmup hike for the beginning of the year.  Andrew and my Laura hiked this with me.  Andrew came on my very first big-mountain hike last year!  It was his first 4,000 footer, but he is now ahead of me since I only did 2 in 2013.

Hi new camera!

Both Andrew and my Laura took photos for me.  Andrew used his phone and Laura had a new little camera that she was trying to figure out. Some stuff looks good but some stuff looks silly! (Laura note: It’s a GoPro which has a super wide angle that sometimes makes things look a bit distorted.)

my fan!
This is a nice hike for dogs.  There is lots of water to drink because the trail crosses Tecumseh Brook a few times for the first half.  Humans can go across rocks but I like plowing through. I met five dogs and lots of people. One lady coming down near the beginning with her neighbor’s dog was really nice.  She loved me.
group selfie!
About halfway there is a little sign that points to a view from the ski slope.  It is pretty and you can see some of the valley and some other mountains like the Tripyramids.

We had a snack break further up and I got some Tail Mix. I love Tail Mix! It is super tasty and super light. My Laura found it but she only lets me have some on hiking trips.  I want some now.
YUM!
Near the top the trail splits.  To the left is the short way on the Sosman Trail, but we went right to stay on the Tecumseh Trail.  That way we saw a different part on the way up and had a slightly shorter trip down.  There was a break in the trees for a little view on the way to the peak.

It was very crowded on the summit.  It is very small with a narrow view.  There was a boy scout troop and some other people and two friends I met at the trail junction.  They liked me.  We had snack (more Tail Mix!) and took some photos.  There is only a cairn and a spike to mark the peak.
My 3rd 4,000 footer!

It sort of rained a little bit on the way down but at least when we were back to the ski slope view the sun was out and the mountains were even prettier.  It was a good day!

Hello!!!

Hi!!!  I’m Frisco and this is my dog-blog.  I go on adventures with my Laura and now I am going to write about them.  Actually, I tell Laura what to type.  She has fingers and I only have toes.

Laura is my big sister.  She has been hiking for a long time and took me on short trips in the park nearby.  When she went on her big mountain hikes, I wanted to go too!  I worked really hard in all my classes and learned lots of good-boy stuffs.  The next time Laura went on her big hike, I gave her the sad puppy eyes and she gave in.  Muahaha.  I mean woof!

Now we are both hiking all 48 mountains in New Hampshire over 4,000 feet tall!  I think that is a lot.  Laura is already halfway done but now she has to do them with ME!  If I can do them all, I get a patch!!!

Time for an adventure!
